In addition to 6.1-channel discrete amplification (100 w x 6 RMS), the HTR-5840 features Yamaha’s Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) amplifier design concept that ensures the highest signal purity and 14 surround programs. Also featured is Silent Cinema, Yamaha’s exclusive technology that allows private listening enjoyment of multichannel music or movie sound, including Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround.

The receiver delivers high power to six channels and features Yamaha’s unique Cinema Digital Sound Field Processing, or DSP–Yamaha’s way of recreating the ambiance of a stadium, a concert hall or an intimate club in the comfort of your own home. The HTR-5840’s digital-to-analog converters use an extremely high performance 192 kHz/24-bit operation type. On top of all this, the HTR-5840 has excellent, high-quality two-channel and multichannel surround reproduction, and it reproduces surround for 5.1 channels and 2.1 (virtual surround).
